Taylor Polak a Content Marketing Specialist representing Concept Seating, sent me this infographic to share with my readers. The idea is that you can do a few simple exercises while at your desk. While none of the exercises are new, the infographic does a nice job of summing up and reminding us that we can do a  few simple movements each day from our desks to keep our bodies more limber and bring fresh oxygen to our bodies and brains as we work!

Note: I do not receive any advertising income from Concept Seating and sharing this infographic is not an endorsement of their products or services. Looking at their chairs, they appear to be very ergonomic and the company is located in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Concept Seating is a Division of LJ Design and Manufacturing an is located at 3205 N 124th St Brookfield, WI 53005. For more info about their chairs and stools, call them at 800-892-5563

Chair massage at airports has gained in popularity over the years. Recently I made a trip to Phoenix, AZ for conference and was able to sample a 15-minute chair massage at the airport.  I was happy to say I received a very good massage from my Phoenix massage therapists, Manuel! (Manuel not pictured, but two other fine massage therapists posed for the pic.)

The price was high ($40 for a 15-minute massage), but since there are not a lot of options in the area, and I know the airports tack on heavy fees, I understand the pricing. I also know the massage therapists earn a fraction of this fee so I tipped well.

In Chicago, Terminal Gateway Spa is the company that provides chair massage in O’Hare International Airport. To the best of my knowledge, I do not think Midway Airport offers chair massage. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong!

For some time, the research behind massage therapy has shown that massage can reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression and improve the ability to get good nights sleep.

In the Institute for Integrative Health Care, Leslie DeMatteo, LMT, MS,  wrote a good article that sums up the symptoms of anxiety and explains that the way massage therapy helps is to help you sleep more soundly and massage also reduces muscle pain.  For more details, read the article here!

It’s helpful to receive comments on this blog. Comments often lead to new resource and connections. A recent Working Well Resource commenter, Julituli, directed me to Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky and her blog on Psychology Today, The How of Happiness.

I read through Dr. Lyubomirsky’s blog and found an intriguing post on Martin Seligman’s latest book, Flourish.

Dr. Lyubomirsky’s review summarizes the premise of Dr. Seligman’s book, that we should focus on “flourishing” versus the overused term, “happiness.” Dr. Lyubomirsky makes the convincing agreement that, “Research reveals that happy people are not self-centered, gratification-seeking hedonists lacking in meaning or fulfillment.  To the contrary, hundreds of studies have shown that happiness relates and leads to such positive outcomes as creativity, productivity, effective coping, satisfying marriages, close friendships, higher earnings, longevity, and strong immune systems.” and she cites this as reason enough to continue to use the term “happiness.”

I’ve followed Dr. Selgiman’s work since I first heard the term “positive psychology.” His research has led to the creation of Comprehensive Soldier Fitness which teaches  resilience training for our nation’s soldiers to help them prevent incidences of PTSD and suicide and to help them cope with, not only the impact of serving in wartime, but of coming home to a life so different from what they experience in the field of battle.

Merriam Webster defines the word “flourish” as to grow well: to be healthy; to be very successful: to do very well, and to thrive. According to Amazon’s summary of Flourish, Dr. Seligman asks, “What is it that enables you to cultivate your talents, to build deep, lasting relationships with others, to feel pleasure, and to contribute meaningfully to the world? In a word, what is it that allows you to flourish? “Well-being” takes the stage front and center, and Happiness (or Positive Emotion) becomes one of the five pillars of Positive Psychology, along with Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment—or PERMA, the permanent building blocks for a life of profound fulfillment. ” In addition to stories of how the U.S. Army is now trained in emotional resilience, the book provides the reader with interactive exercises to help you explore your own attitudes and aims, with the goal of helping you get more out of life and to well, flourish!

If you want to learn more about how to Flourish, check out Dr. Seligman’s book, Flourish.

A few weeks ago I had the chance to visit an amazing toy store, the Magic Tree Bookstore in Oak Park. It was full of colorful, educational, and fun, toys, books, and games. With Winter coming around the corner, having interesting games, toys and activities for active kids who will soon be cooped up inside is a great strategy for parents. Magic Tree has crafts, magic trick sets, basic loom making kits, all kinds of clay and art supplies, educational coloring books (Color a dinosaur!), easy snow cone and ice cream makers, colorful chalk, frisbees of all sizes, candle making kids, superhero action figures and a few play areas for kids to play while mom and dad, or grandpa and grandma shop.

And play isn’t just for children. Adults can benefit from play as well. In, The Benefits of Play for Adults, from Helpguide.org, authors explain how play can help adults reduce stress, be more creative and increase productivity at work. Magic Tree is one of the few remaining stores that sells games like Settlers of Catan and games that encourage cooperation instead of competition like Cauldron Quest.

Stand Up Desks are becoming very popular these days as people realize that sitting all day is not healthy for our backs and bodies. But electric lift desks can be expensive. There are alternative, crank desks, desktop risers, and more. One alternative is the Varidesk.

Varidesk raises quickly!

Varidesk raises quickly!

Varidesk offers a variety of options, A standing desk, a desktop riser for laptops, standing desks for those with multiple monitors and foot pads that help reduce strain on your knees when you stand for long periods. One reason I like the Varidesk is that it is relatively affordable, easy to set  up (most models require no installation!) and most versions can sit on top of your existing desk.

Varidesk ProPlus can sit on top of your regular desk

For those of you with one monitor, prices for the Varidesk models range from $275-375.  For those with multiple monitors, prices range from $350-$650.

Keep in mind, neither sitting all day nor standing all day is great for your back and body. Alternating between sitting, standing, stretching, walking (to restroom or short walks around the office) is optimal for your spine and overall health. I recommend that either program your phone or computer to cue you to change position (take a break sit if standing, stand if sitting) about every 30-45 minutes so that you don’t over tire your muscles and put too much wear and tear on any one body part. If I had my way, we’ve all have access to swimming pools/lakes near our workplaces so we could take short swimming breaks.  But it would have to rain a whole lot more in Chicago for that to happen any time soon!

Varidesk fits most office environments easily

In the meantime, if you are considering investing in your own stand up desk, and don’t want to spend thousands of dollars, check out the Varidesk options here.

Note: Neither, I , Sue Shekut, nor Working Well Massage, has any financial interest or relationship with Varidesk.  (Other than I may become a customer.) I simply saw a Varidesk a ta client site and asked them where they bought it. I looked into the product and was impressed! And my clients seem to enjoy using them, which is the best endorsement.
