Today is the day we are encouraged to show our loved ones we care!

What’s the history of Valentine’s Day? According to the History Channel, there are many stories about how the day got it’s name, the primary story being about a saint named Valentine or Valentinus either protesting the Emperer’s outlawing marriage for young men (So they would make better soldiers) or being imprisoned for protesting harsh treatment of prisoners and while imprisoned himself, sending the first “valentine” love letter to a girl he fancied. And, according to the History Channel, Saint Valentine is the patron saint not only of love, but of beekeeping, travel, epilepsy, fainting and the plague.

Nowadays, people most likely think of Valentine’s as a day of romance, showing you care, giving pink or red flowers, candy and cards. It is also a great day to show the ones you love you care by gifting them a relaxing massage!

Feel free to purchase gift certificates for chair massage for your loved ones today via this link. Or stop by our WWM chair massage station at Whole Foods Lincoln park and buy gift certificates in person from 12noon to 8pm every day (except on major holidays or during polar vortexes!).

Recently, I had the chance to work a few hours in the Working Well Massage chair massage station inside Whole Foods Market in Lincoln Park. In years past, I’ve spent many hours in the WWM booths, giving chair massages, talking to clients and enjoying the time in the store. While I was giving massages recently, I was mindful of the time I started and kept track of the pace of my massages based on the clock we have in our booth. And I thought back to a Yelp review we once had in which a client complained that her massage therapist was a “clock watcher.”

Normally the term “clock watcher” is a pejorative term. According to dictionary. com,  a clock watcher is “an employee who demonstrates lack of interest in a job by watching the time closely to be sure to stop work as soon as the workday or shift is over,” or “any person who watches the time closely, as in expectation of some news or event.” It seems the Yelper thought the massage therapist was watching the lock because she was disinterested in giving her a massage. Far from it. Like a coach using a stop watch to track a students race times, or a dentist waiting a certain number of minutes for Novocaine to kick in, some jobs are time dependent.

Minute Hand Time Clock Hour Stopwatch Second

When a massage therapist gives a massage, but especially a chair massage, we based our pace and the amount of time we allocate to each area we massage, on the number of minutes of the massage the client requests.

Addressing neck pain means we may focus more time on the upper torso and neck. How much time we focus directly on the neck depends on the overall length of time of the massage.

Massage therapists watch the clock to make sure we stay on track and have enough time to effectively address each area the client wants work on. Most massage therapists will periodically look at the clock and note how much time we have left to address the areas we need to work. If we did not do this, you might get a really great massage on one side the body and then about 1 minute to address the other side!

So if you are receiving a massage and see your massage therapist glance at the clock,  it is not that he or she is bored or wants to get the massage over with. Rest assured that your massage therapist is doing their best to pace themselves and make sure the areas you need addressed are massaged effectively. Then, go ahead and relax and enjoy the massage!

On Saturday, August 19, 2017, I was honored to be part of the IlliniCare Health Fair at Compassion Baptist Church in the South Side of Chicago. Two of our Working Well Massage therapists, Nikki and Sara, joined me to provide relaxing chair massage to attendees of the event. Between the three of us, we massaged over 100 people on Saturday.

According to IlliniCare Health, 700 members of the surrounding community took part in the event.  IlliniCare Health’s goal in holding this event was to strengthen our community by improving health care access, increasing the awareness of pivotal resources, and championing the importance of education.  IlliniCare Health we believe treating people with kindness, respect, and dignity empowers healthy decisions and that healthier individuals create more vibrant families and communities. Working Well Massage shares these values as well and we thank IlliniCare Health for inviting us to work with them at this event!

We met Chicago Alderman Gregory Mitchell of the 7th Ward, and Congresswoman Robin Kelly at the 2nd annual Health Fair and Back-to-School Kickoff. gave children as young as 7-years-old and seniors as old as 91 relaxing massages! Illinois Eye Institute provided free vision check ups. Walgreens provided free flu shots and blood pressure checks.

Sara massages an attendee while other patiently wait for their massages. In the background, people line up for vision screening exams.

I was so proud of my team for helping everyone enjoy themselves. Along with WWM, there were health care providers offering free vision screening, dental care and  a host of other services. IlliniCare Health gave away free backpacks and wonderful nutritious lunches as well.

People of all ages patiently waiting for their massage as others browse free eyeglass selections

Bronzeville Children’s Museum “You Are What You Eat” exhibit also taught attendees about healthy eating and working out while having fun.

Chair massage at airports has gained in popularity over the years. Recently I made a trip to Phoenix, AZ for conference and was able to sample a 15-minute chair massage at the airport.  I was happy to say I received a very good massage from my Phoenix massage therapists, Manuel! (Manuel not pictured, but two other fine massage therapists posed for the pic.)

The price was high ($40 for a 15-minute massage), but since there are not a lot of options in the area, and I know the airports tack on heavy fees, I understand the pricing. I also know the massage therapists earn a fraction of this fee so I tipped well.

In Chicago, Terminal Gateway Spa is the company that provides chair massage in O’Hare International Airport. To the best of my knowledge, I do not think Midway Airport offers chair massage. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong!

When you visit our booth, let the massage therapist know you will be paying with credit card. Our team will be using their smart phones to process credit card payments so please be patient with us as we acclimate to the technology!

On Tuesday, January 31, 2017, I spent a few hours working with Najat, one of our long time WWM massage therapists, dismantling and cleaning up the space that has held our chair massage station for many years.

Najat cleans our space as we dismantle our WWM booth

Najat cleans our space as we dismantle our WWM booth

Since I first made the announcement that WFM Gold Coast Store Team Leader had asked us to close our booth, I’ve had many calls and emails from concerned clients that are sad and worried about our booth closing. Sadly, WWM had no control over whether we would leave the WFM Gold Coast store. If it was up to WWM, we would have stayed open at this location, but like many Chicago institutions, our time was over. WFM Gold Coast leadership wanted to bring more cafe seating into the space we occupied.  As Najat would say, C’est Le Vie.

What took 15 years to build, we knocked down in hours!

I’ve heard wonderful stories from clients that have visited us in the Gold Coast location for many years. One client credits his newfound health and heart improvement on regular chair massage by WWM massage therapists. He said his doctors are surprised at his recovery and tell him to keep the massages up! Another client told me she has used our massage services for 11-12 years and worries she will not be able to travel to our Lincoln Park location for massages once we closed our booths.

No more WWM at WFM Gold Coast-WWM has left the building!

No more WWM at WFM Gold Coast-WWM has left the building on 1-31-17!

We apologize to customers that found our Gold Coast location convenient and are unable to travel to our Lincoln Park location. WWM would be happy to reopen in another location in the River North or Gold Coast or Streeterville area if we can find a good arrangement. We have looked at other potential locations, but thus far, have not had any promising offers for another space for our booth.  Unfortunately chair massage is not lucrative enough for us to afford the high rent of Gold Coast office space for a chair massage station. Our partnership with WFM, which has long been a company committed to whole body and wellness, has been a natural relationship. And one we happily continue with WFM Lincoln Park!

For those clients of our WWM chair massage booth in the Gold Coast, we say thank you for stopping by and getting massages, sharing your lives, your pain, your joy and your stories through the years. You have touched each and every one of us emotionally, as we have touched your muscles and helped relieve your tension and deal with stress!
