Last week I posted about the Medical Corp’s Field Medicine class in Ohio. Today I thought I’d give you a bit more info about emergency dental care.  Years ago, when I was in Greece, (hardly a Third World country but far from home and my regular dentist), one of my gold crowns came out and I had a choice to either try to find a dentist in the small island I was visiting, or try to implant a temporary filing myself. As luck would have it, there was a dentist traveling with my group and his finance had an emergency dental filling kit with her. I was able to use this temporary kit to fill my open tooth and make it through the rest of the trip without having to spend a whole day seeking out a local dentist. If I had been backpacking I would have had no choice but to use the kit. I now add the temporary dental hit to my hiking gear. (Easy to find at more drug stores.)

Don’t want to make a trip to the drug store? Get your emergency dental kit from Amazon here: Adventure Medical Kits Dental Medic Kit It costs about $12 online (plus shipping) and contains:

  • Compact, Lightweght and Waterproof Bag
  • Instruction manual for dealing with common dental ailments
  • Orasol pain reliever
  • Tea bag, dental floss and wax
  • Waterproof, durable and resealable bag

Walkstation from Steelcase

What if you could work out while you worked? What if by working out you could generate enough electricity to power your own computer and the computer of the coworker next to you. And what if you could do this without breaking a sweat?

I had this conversation with a client recently. We wondered how long it would take before movement and energy generation are combined to give workers  the opportunity to stay healthy and fit, reduce energy dependence on renewable resources and  transform the workplace.

The technology for such a workplace exists albeit in its infancy. We wrote about the Human Dynamo in this post and about the Walkstation in this post. Since humans can walk for long periods of time without much stress or injury and since research points to the need for human beings to move more than they do with sedentary desk jobs, it makes sense doesn’t it.

My client suggested a world in which we all have renewable battery packs that we can recharge simply by exercising. That way you could plug your renewable battery pack into just about any electronic device including your workplace computer and Walkstation/Human Dynamo bike.

Maybe in this scenario, workers  that exercise a great deal may get credits toward lower health insurance premiums.   Perhaps workers generate credits in their youth that store for when they are  and less able to move. But then again, walking on treadmill is fairly doable (even at low speeds) for most people. People with problems walking or exercising could earn energy credits in other ways.

I’m interested to hear what my readers think. What other changes do you see in the workplace of the future?

So you’ve been reading my blog and you decided to get outdoors AND help others…in a Third World Country. Or you are going to go on a long vacation backpacking through Africa, South America or Asia or even a remote part of the U.S. Congratulations, and have I got a book recommendation for you!

I”m a big fan of Survivorman and some of the other survivor type shows (Out of the Wild, the Alaska Experiment; Man, Woman Wild and Dual Survival) are all interesting to watch and learn from. But personally, I am not anxious to brave the wild myself, make my own fire, eat dead squirrels I killed and skinned myself or sleep in freezing temperatures with only pine needles and a reflective blanket to keep me warm. I say that now, but what if I went hiking and got lost deep in the woods or in a seeming tropical paradise? I’d like to know how to survive then!

Where can one go to find out how to survive a medical emergency or issue in any of the above conditions?  While checking out some of the referring links to my blog I found a few survivalist sites and from there found an interesting books and classes to help you prepare for a trip to a less developed area of the world–or prepare for an emergency in the U.S. like a flood or other natural or even man-made disaster.

The first is a book, Where There Is No Doctor: A Village Health Care Handbook. It’s presented as a public health primer for people living in Third World countries, small isolated villages, etc. that lack basic medical care. It’s a paperback and costs about $12.00 on Amazon. it contains info on practical, easily understood information on how to diagnose, treat, and prevent common diseases. Special attention is focused on nutrition, infection and disease prevention, and diagnostic techniques as primary ways to prevent and treat health problems. This 2007 reprint includes new material on preventing the transmission of blood-borne diseases, how HIV/AIDS is reflected in many health issues, and basic Antiretroviral treatment information, as well as updated information on children and aspirin, stomach ulcers, hepatitis, and malaria treatments.

Click here: Where There Is No Doctor: A Village Health Care Handbook to order.

Learning to apply a cast in Medical Corps Field Course

The second interesting source is a Field Medicine Class put on by Medical Corps. The Medical Corps’ Field Medicine course is an intense, 3-day classroom and field training program, designed to provide students with hands-on training in:

* suturing and minor surgery
* bandaging wounds and lacerations
* medications
* sterile procedure
* Nuclear, Biological and Chemical preparedness
* fracture management & casting, and
* dental emergencies, temporary fillings and recementing crowns

Tuition is $345 for a three-day class. Lodging and food not included. Classes are held at the Ohio State University Extension Campus, 16714 State Route 215, Caldwell, OH 43724. Find registration information here.

I posted today about the Breakthrough Running club serving the youth of East Garfield Park. If you don’t have time to be a coach/mentor, you can still help out. The Running Club is nearing their first race of the fall season. To help keep the excitement and motivation going for our kids we are asking all our friends to collect running clothing and gear, new or very lightly used, to give to the boys and girls running in this program.

Items needed:  all sizes-for both boys and girls! Boy’s, girls, men’s woman’s, running specific clothing (shorts, pants, tops, jackets) and accessories (socks, sport bras, gloves and hats) and any other gear you wish to donate that is running appropriate.  Please no cotton clothing and no shoes needed.

Thanks to a Breakthrough supporter, all participating kids just got brand new shoes from Fleet Feet Sports on Tuesday! Fleet Feet discounts the shoes and threw in a pair of running socks for each child- way to go Fleet Feet, they are an awesome partner to this program.

Breakthrough Runners

The world is full of problems and that can be stressful. But feeling like I am doing my part to be part of the solution, versus part of the problem, makes me  feel a lot better and less stressed. I am always happy to hear a new story about people being active in volunteerism and fitness as well. Yesterday, I had a wonderful, heartwarming talk with Melissa Hoovy, Senior VP of Marketing Services from Legacy Marketing Partners, about a fantastic program she’s been involved with for the past two years:  Breakthrough Ministries Running Club for teenage boys and girls in the East Garfield Park area. And Melissa said they are looking for a few more good men and women to be mentors for the kids.

Melissa started her work with the running club last year when it was only offered for girls. But the program was so successful that it’s been expanded this year. According to Melissa, “Developments from last year include the addition of a boy’s group and adult mentors and more children overall participating, we have about 40 kids running now from last years 22.  It is fast becoming a valued program both for the adult coaches/mentors as well as the children getting to develop a love a running as well as new relationships with caring adults.”

The Breakthrough running club focuses on providing an opportunity for boys and girls to partner with individual coaches and train for at least two 5k races in Summer/Fall of 2010. Every student and mentor will meet together for a group run once a week on Saturdays (Girls =8:15am, Boys=10:30am) where there will be a brief group discussion time, hitting specific issues such as physical health, self-confidence, and emotional support, followed by a group run, and finishing with a cool down session where a healthy snack will be served.  There will also be a mid-week run held at Westinghouse H.S on Thursday evenings at 6pm.

The Runners:
The young men and women who are participating in this program are from East Garfield Park which is one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in Chicago with the unemployment rate at three times the city average and the drug crime ranking in the top %10 of Chicago’s seventy seven community areas (CPD CLEAR DATA 2007).

The Goal: The goal for this program is for our young people to expand their adult network through their individual coach/mentor, develop the knowledge and ability to live a healthy lifestyle through running, and to build self-confidence by accomplishing their commitment of finishing a 5k race.

The Miles: The students in the program will consistently be exposed to different areas of the city outside of their neighborhood through our group runs which will be held in Lincoln Park, the Lake Front, Humboldt Park and other city locations.  Training runs start with a very easy run/walk sequence and progress to runs about 3 miles in length at the end of the program and just prior to race day.

The Training: The training run for the Summer/Fall program began on August 14th and  continues through  Lawndale 5K run on Sept 18th (Both Boys and Girls Clubs will run Lawndale) and finish with the boys running the Hot Chocolate 5k on November 6th and the Girls running the Girls on the Run 5k on November 13th.

The Need: In order to give each student the maximum opportunity to improve their health and fitness we desire to provide them with adult partners, running shoes and athletic wear that they need.

How You Can Participate

Be a Running Partner —Being a running partner involves the relationship that will make this program a success!  Every running partner will be paired with a specific group of girls or boys for the season.  As the student’s partner it is your job to stick with your girl or boy during the group runs and become the positive role model and encourager that he or she needs.  The running partner will also contact the student at least once a week using the phone or text messages to make sure you both are sticking to your plan.

Be a Snack Coordinator – Since one of our goals is to teach the young people healthy lifestyles, this position is very important!  As the partners finish the group run, we will gather together and eat a healthy snack and drink as we debrief about the run and discussion.  The snack coordinator will be responsible for providing and distributing the food and drink for this post run-activity, we can provide cups, jugs, plates, napkins, and a table if necessary and communicated prior.

Donate Running Clothing and Gear– Breakthrough is doing a clothing drive for running  clothing and would take donations of any size, any gender and any season of; running shorts, running tops (dri fit if possible) socks, sport bras, outer jackets, gloves etc.  pretty much anything but shoes.  Anyone interested can contact Rusty Funk at Breakthrough rfunk@breakthrough.org to find out how you can help out.

Running Kids Need Running Shoes!

Monetary donations– Anyone can donate to Breakthrough via the website and just specify youth and family services when you make a donation online.  Working Well Massage donated 35 matching Breakthrough fleece headbands to Breakthrough’s Running Club for the youngsters this Fall season (a $200 value)! Feel free to match our donation or any amount you can spare!

I’ve been getting a lot of hits on my blog lately for my Wii Fit Tai Chi post. I regret to report I still haven’t found a Tai Chi program for Wii Fit. I wrote Nintendo and asked if there had any plans for a Tai Chi program. Their response was, “We don’t have any announcements about a Wii Fit Module.” When I asked what this means the response from Nintendo Customer Service was that they don’t know of any such programs being developed and wouldn’t be able to tell me until the product is actually ready for release. They also told me they don’t accept (and other game developers don’t accept) unsolicited ideas for their games.   But fret not, loyal readers, in this post I provide some other resources for Tai Chi (until Nintendo or EA or another gaming company produces a Wii Fit module for Tai Chi. Or a Tai Chi module for Wii Fit).

As you all know, I am a big believer in eating healthy and exercising outdoors when possible. And I am not afraid to travel to seek out new places to enjoy the great outdoors. However, when traveling or even for short day hikes, it’s a challenge to find healthy food nearby.  For that reason I recently invested in a fantastic product that I can take (and have taken) with me to ensure my partner and I eat healthy when away from home. What is it? It’s a cooler with a mess kit attached. Well, not really a mess kit, more of an upscale picnic set. There are a few different versions of this tote but I liked the Picnic Time Solano 412-44 Blue w/Grey Fully-insulated Picnic Cooler Tote best.

Plates, glasses, silverware, even salt and pepper shakers for the road. Image by Sue Shekut

Before a day hike or a long trip, I pack up the cooler section of this pack with a few cool packs or ice in a plastic baggie. Then I can slip in some fresh sandwiches, fruit or even tuna fish salad or any healthy snack or meal that requires refrigeration.  We set out on our hike and I may take a tortilla and some lunch meat along for a mid day snack. By placing the meat next to the water pack in my camelback, I can keep it cool enough until I eat it a few hours later. The pack in the car keeps the rest of the food cold so we have food when we return from a long day’s hike. Then we can sit in the car and lay out plates, silverware and even cloth napkins for a small feast!  We used this pack on our recent trip to Door County and enjoyed a nice meal on the tailgate of my boyfriends truck.

You can get this pack or similar packs on Amazon. (I found  a similar picnic pack at REI but it does not include the cooler.)  Order from Amazon here: NEW Picnic Time Solano 412-44 Blue w/Grey Fully-insulated Picnic Cooler Tote High Quality Pretty Cost $49.95.

* Durable polyester canvas construction, an adjustable shoulder strap
* Fully-insulated food/drink compartment with 18-can capacity
